Buffalo Bills “Bye Week” 2013 Event

byeweek-slider

If you’re not familiar, a “Bye Week” is basically a week off for a football team in the middle of the season.  Here in Rochester, a lot of fans follow the Buffalo Bills and for some couples, the idea of shopping for wedding-related stuff on a Sunday during football season is, lets just say, something of a challenge.

Since the Bills aren’t playing this Sunday, we decided to have a special “Bye Week” event.  Stop by the store on Sunday, November 24th from noon to 4pm – we’ll have pizza and beverages and you can check out all the latest tuxes and suits for your wedding party.  Best of all, you won’t have to miss a week of the Bill’s season.

Rochester Bridal Show Tips

BridalShowPic

Bridal Shows can be a treasure trove of information for newly engaged couples. The nice part about them is you don’t need to drive all over town to meet with wedding professionals, it can be a, “one stop shopping” experience if you want.  That said, they can sometimes be overwhelming for the uninitiated.  Here are a few tips to help make your next bridal show a little easier.

  1. Bring adhesive address labels, if you have them, or print some up on your computer. This will save you a lot of time when you register for prizes at individual booths. Most exhibitors will want to know your wedding date, fiance’s name and a way to contact you if you’ve won, so add those things to the label as well.
  2. Have a calendar handy to schedule follow up appointments with vendors you’d like to talk with in more depth.
  3. Eat before you go – some shows feature light snacks but don’t count on having a lot to eat while you’re at the show. Eating before you go helps you concentrate on your wedding rather than your stomach.
  4. Bring a small bottle of water – gathering info and talking with wedding pros all afternoon can make you thirsty. Most places have a drinking fountain (or sometimes a bar to grab a beverage) but if you bring a little water you won’t have to hunt those things down.
  5. Colored Stickers – we’ve seen several brides do this and we think it helps save a little time.  Grab some inexpensive dot or star stickers at an office supply store and put the stickers on brochures or flyers you get  of things you like.  Realistically, after you’ve spoken with 50 vendors some things start to run together in your mind.  A sticker on the brochure helps you flag it for later when you want to investigate your options after the show.
  6. Notebook & Pen – Okay, you don’t have to be a court stenographer at the show, but if you want to jot some notes down or capture that great idea you saw, this is an easy way to do it.  The camera on your phone is a good way to visually capture things you want to remember too.
  7. Wear comfortable shoes – it’s easy to spend a two to four hours visiting with vendors, watching the fashion show, etc. Sore feet make most people cranky, so do yourself a favor and wear sensible shoes.
  8. Bring your finace (at least once) – We know it can be hard to convince a lot of guys to come to a bridal show on a Sunday (especially if there’s a game on), but having him there will help keep both of you on the same page as you move through the planning process, even if you have different ideas about various aspects of planning your big day.
  9. Create a temporary e-mail to be used while you are planning your wedding. That way you can delete it when you no longer are interested in receiving special offers or hearing from vendors. The amount of offers you receive at first may seem overwhelming, but take the time to read them or you may miss out on some very good deals.
  10. Walk down every aisle and collect any information you are interested in and take it home to look over again at your leisure. Most large bridal shows will provide you with a large shopping bag as long as you register when you enter.
  11. Ask lots of questions, that’s what the vendors are there for. They want to help you, so find out everything you need to know.

Finally, have fun and take advantage of all the knowledge in the room.  Even if you think you know what direction you want to go, most vendors have a good sense of what works and what doesn’t since they help couples with weddings most weekends of the year.  Tap into that knowledge and you’ll make your big day more fun with less stress.

How to Pin on a Boutonniere

How to Pin a Boutonniere in Rochester, NY

The day that you have been waiting for is here!  After your date arrives to pick you up (looking handsome in his tuxedo from Vittorio’s) and hands you your beautiful corsage, you must tackle his boutonniere. While this may seem intimidating, it can be done easily in a few simple steps.

  1. Before you pin it on, make sure that the flower is in the front with all of the greenery arranged behind it.
  2. Pin the flower on your date’s lapel or just outside the broadest part of the lapel on his left side, which is to your right.
  3. Place the head of the pin under the lapel and push the point through the coat, into the boutonniere and back through the coat.
  4. Make sure it hangs straight, and you are good to go!

Webster Thomas Prom Rep Takes the Prize!

Top Prom Rep 2013 - Tantillo

Out of 74 active prom reps this season, one took the top spot with the most paid referrals during the season.  Derek Tantillo was a junior at Webster Thomas High School this year and through creativity and hard work earned a discount on his tuxedo rental (a high-end special order tux, in case you were wondering) and an Apple iPad for his efforts.  Here’s a picture of him accepting his prize at our store this past weekend.  We can’t wait to see what his senior year brings!

It’s really through the efforts of prom reps like Derek that we are able to have a successful prom season and although we are only able to give one top prize, we appreciate everyone’s efforts this year.

If you know of a high school student in the Rochester area – please send them our way for next year’s season.  While it’s usually the guys wearing tuxes, the program is open to both boys and girls.  This can be a great opportunity to win some nice prizes, save some money on a tux or suit rental or purchase and more importantly, participate in an activity that develops marketing and business skills that can be valuable later in life.  Many Ambassadors have used this experience to demonstrate initiative to future employers, on applications for college and in other ways that extend far beyond prom season.

Congratulations to Derek and if you want more information on our Ambassador program, it can be found right here: Prom Ambassasor Program

Vittorio’s Helps Sponsor ROC Transit Day

ROC Transit Day

ROC Transit Day (June 20, 2013) is a grassroots campaign intended to encourage Rochesterians to use public transit and go car-free for one day. Rochester area employers can request free all-day bus passes for their employees. And anyone with a transit fare card on ROC Transit Day can redeem exclusive deals and offers at participating shops and businesses.

Vittorio Menswear & Tuxedo is a sponsor this year and is participating in the discount program to encourage folks to go a little easier on our environment by leaving their car home for a day.  On June 20th we’ll take 15% off the regular price of a future tuxedo rental or any regular price retail purchase in our store by showing your RTS Fare Card.  We’re also giving our employees transit passes for the day to help out the effort.  We hope you’ll join us in helping make this year a success!

Here are a few details about public transit that you may not have realized:

Public Transportation Saves Money

  • The average household spends 16 cents of every dollar on transportation, and 94% of this goes to buying, maintaining, and operating cars, the largest expenditure after housing.
  • Public transportation provides an affordable, and for many, necessary, alternative to driving.
  • Households that are likely to use public transportation on a given day save more than $9,700 every year.

Public Transportation Reduces Gasoline Consumption

  • Public transportation’s overall effects save the United States 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually.
  • Households near public transit drive an average of 4,400 fewer miles than households with no access to public transit. This equates to an individual household reduction of 223 gallons per year.

Public Transportation Reduces Carbon Footprint

  • Communities that invest in public transit reduce the nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually: equivalent to  New York City; Washington, DC; Atlanta; Denver; and Los Angeles combined stopped using electricity.
  • A single commuter switching his or her commute to public transportation can reduce a household’s carbon emissions by 10%, or up to 30% if he or she eliminates a second car. When compared to other household actions that limit CO2, taking public transportation can be 10 times greater in reducing this harmful greenhouse gas.
